Help …… I’m too old for this social media stuff!

Posted by Justina Treventi on Thu, Jun 13, 2013

In 1981 I started my working life as a medical transcriptionist. I was an excellent typist typewriterand had mastered the electric typewriter. When I began working as a transcriptionist I was exposed to this big machine called a word processor. It had a keyboard and displayed what I was typing on a monitor – just plain type on a brown/black background. But what I loved about it was I could type as fast as I wanted and not worry about making mistakes; I could just go back and use this cool delete button and fix spelling – no correction tape required!

Over the years I changed jobs, technology progressed, and email became the way to stay in touch with people and I could use different fonts, colors, backgrounds, and let’s not forget clip art, to enhance my finely honed typing skills. In 2003 I went back to college and began the process of completely changing my career (see this blog about my story). I realized in my past jobs I really had very little exposure to all of the computer programs available. That was when I decided I needed to start asking some of the younger students to show me how to utilize programs like Excel and PowerPoint. They were all so helpful and willing to share what they knew with me.
